The DAISY Foundation
The DAISY Foundation is the leading international organization for nursing recognition. Through collaborations with professional healthcare organizations such as NPACE, The Daisy Foundation hopes to benefit the nursing profession overall, sharing the important role that nurses play in our society.
What is The DAISY Foundation?
Active in healthcare facilities around the world, The DAISY Foundation is a public foundation (501(c) (3)) serving the nursing profession through recognition programs as well as grants for nursing research and evidence-based practice. The DAISY Foundation was created in 1999 in memory of the extraordinary nursing care provided to J. Patrick Barnes during his eight-week hospitalization for idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura, an auto-immune disease. His family’s drive to say “thank you” to nurses for the compassionate and skillful care they provide daily has evolved to play a strategic role in healthcare organizations. The nursing profession highly respects DAISY’s programs as providing unique, meaningful, and impactful recognition that benefits nurses and their work organizations.
Today, over 5,800 healthcare organizations and schools of nursing in 38 countries are committed to honoring their nurses with The DAISY Award® for Extraordinary Nurses. Over 2.5 million nurses have been nominated by their patients, families, and colleagues, and over 200,000 awards have been granted.
DAISY Supportive Associations
DAISY currently works with many national and international nursing and healthcare organizations with which our missions align. These organizations appreciate and share DAISY’s commitment to recognizing compassion in care delivery. DAISY Supportive Associations are a key source of The DAISY Foundation’s outreach and underscore the deep relationships that evolve in supporting each other over time.

DAISY Programs – Honoring Nurses Wherever They Practice Throughout Their Careers
The DAISY Foundation’s flagship award, The DAISY Award, honors the reason nurses became nurses – to provide compassionate care for patients and their families – with celebrations throughout the year.
* The DAISY Team Award is given to nurse-led teams (maybe inter-professional) who provide above-and-beyond care for a patient or family member.
* The DAISY Nurse Leader Award recognizes nursing leaders who provide the environment and encouragement for compassionate care to thrive.
* The DAISY Award For Faculty honors the inspiration provided by nursing faculty to their students.
* The DAISY Award For Nursing Students was introduced to recognize and encourage extraordinary and compassionate care by students in their clinical rotations and beyond.
* The DAISY Award for Health Equity recognizes nurses impacting underserved communities by addressing Social Determinants of Health (SDOH).
In January 2023, The DAISY Award for Nursing Ethics in Practice and Leadership will be introduced to shine a light on the ethical way nurses lead and practice in alignment with the ANA Code of Nursing Ethics.
DAISY’s J. Patrick Barnes Grants for Nursing Research and Evidence-Based Practice Projects support nurse-driven inquiry around treating cancer and diseases of the autoimmune system. DAISY Honorees may also apply for grants to pay their expenses on medical missions worldwide through the DAISY Medical Mission Grant program. In addition, grants are offered for nurses through DAISY’s Health Equity in EBP and Research to identify interventions regarding SDOHs.
There is strong evidence that DAISY programs, which focus on meaningful recognition, contribute to higher nurse satisfaction and subsequent retention and improve the patient and family experience during hospitalization. Nurses recognized with The DAISY Award are deeply honored when nominated by their patients, families, and colleagues and selected through peer review. Simply put, the organizations that have DAISY programs love them! Professional nursing organizations support The DAISY Foundation’s programs because they align well with key strategic nursing and patient care priorities.
