Fall thoughts: What do Halloween and Healthcare Have in Common?
By: Terri Schmitt PhD, APRN, FNP-BC, FAANP
Executive Director, NPACE

I love Halloween! I absolutely, unapologetically love it. I love it so much that my zombie-prom annual event has become renown in recent years. I am giddy that the clock is ticking closer to this best of holidays. I really want to write about Halloween as we approach fall. To prepare for this newsletter I completed a quick Google search of ‘Halloween and Healthcare’ and was not prepared for the sheer amount of fright I would experience from this action. Looking up Halloween and Healthcare produces loads of frightening articles about food allergies from trick or treats, Halloween injuries, and how horrific the entire holiday is in the ER, primarily for children and teens. Uber amounts of caution and woe abound in healthcare and Halloween information. Reading further I learned how Halloween costumes feed anxieties, fear, bullying, and danger! How could my favorite holiday be an event of such high caution?

Sepsis Update: Antibiotic Timing
Carla Ramjit, DNP, AGACNP-BC, FNP-BC

September is Sepsis Awareness Month, and in this month, clinicians launch programs aimed at educating the community and peers on the current goals regarding care for sepsis. Sepsis IS treatable. Numerous studies have supported the standardized guidelines that clinicians can refer to in treating sepsis.

If the criteria are met for the suspicion or confirmation of sepsis, providers will evaluate for a source of infection and begin a treatment regimen1. For adult patients, the Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM) has routinely updated the guidelines on treating sepsis in patient care settings.

Healio Highlight Article

Headline News: "Edoxaban reduced clinical events with less bleeding vs. dual therapy for AF, stable CAD"

"Edoxaban monotherapy for patients with atrial fibrillation and stable coronary disease reduced risk for adverse clinical events, mainly driven by lower bleeding risk, compared with dual antiplatelet therapy, a speaker reported.

The results of the EPIC-CAD trial conducted in South Korea were presented at the European Society of Cardiology Congress and simultaneously published in The New England Journal of Medicine." (Healio, 2024)

Key Takeaways:
  •  Single antiplatelet therapy with edoxaban reduced bleeding risk in patients with AF and stable CAD vs. dual therapy.
  •  Incidence of death, MI and stroke and other events were similarly low between the two groups.

 Clinical Nurse Educator Academy

The Clinical Nurse Educator Academy is a professional development program funded by HRSA to increase the Nursing Education workforce in clinical settings. As Nurse Practitioners (NPs), we may not have been formally educated in our graduate programs in the theories and competencies of a nurse educator, yet we often serve as Preceptors and sometimes serve as faculty with Schools of Nursing. As the NP workforce continues to rapidly expand, we should be educated in the knowledge, skills and abilities of a Nurse Educator. Developing our own clinical educator competencies will help us to become more confident, structure learning experiences for learners, and mitigate the risk of slowing our productivity down during patient care.
