June Director Notes: I want my CE to Mean Something!

I Want My Continued Learning to Mean Something!
By: Terri Schmitt PhD, APRN, FNP-BC, FAANP
Executive Director, NPACE

Anyone who knows me knows I am an idealistic Pollyanna in everything from people I meet to causes I support and most specifically in the work I choose to do. I need things to mean something and not simply be an exercise in box-checking, taking up time and resources. Yes, I fully realize box-checking is a necessary part of adulting, like when I write a to-do list simply to check things off and feel I’ve actually been productive (don’t come at me on this time management and leadership persons). However, no one wants to box-check in excessive tedium. Time is finite and one thing we cannot make more of. I’m making a concerted effort to use mine more wisely.

State licensing renewal and CE completion are an area where I feel like I have to do a lot of box checking.  Having to complete repetitive education on topics across states, and reading PDF documents without any real impact on my practice or the patients I serve – proves frustrating. CE presented in this manner is not engaging-what a lost opportunity! Sometimes though, I don’t know what CE product or organization to choose from, where to go, what courses will engage, etc. Essentially rolling the dice with each conference I sign up for or on-demand education I choose.

Like most advanced practice providers I need advice, help choosing – sort of like those great staff suggestion cards affixed to the shelves in big wine stores. I find them incredibly helpful and I read all of them! They help me choose how I spend my dollars for quality and preference. NPACE is soon beginning the same type of advice from real working NPs who have completed hundreds of hours of CE content and who know the intricacies of building good continuing education for advanced practice providers.

To get a taste of what this new course highlight will be like read some suggestions from Beth Williams New England area FNP and myself (check out the courses we reference if you like!).

Beth’s Suggestions:
Josh Hamilton, DNP – Pharmacogenomics: Precision Medicine & Mental Health Treatment:  CLICK HERE
This session will CHANGE the way you think about prescribing for mental health conditions. Grab your popcorn and notebook, while Josh demonstrates how pharmacogenomics can guide you in personalizing treatment for your patients, even those that appear to be refractory.

Alison Marshall, Ph.D., FNP – Beyond the Basics: Vaginal and Vulvar Health: CLICK HERE
Do you ever meet someone that you think, “Gosh, we could be friends”? This is Alison Marshall. She’s funny, brilliant, and confident as she takes learners through a GYN workshop that keeps you engaged and interested throughout the session. This will speak to both new and seasoned providers and you’ll quickly see why she is one of our favorite speakers!

Terri Suggestions:
An Evidence-Based Approach to Maximizing Benefit & Limiting Antibiotic Risks in Community-Acquired Pneumonia. – Eric Wombwell: CLICK HERE
In this cutting-edge and engaging presentation pharmacist, Dr. Eric Wombwell walks the learner through the latest evidence and the 2019 guidelines for community-acquired pneumonia. One of the best presentations on understanding antibiotics and treating CAP that I have listened to in my 3 decades in healthcare!

Updates in the Management of Hypertension – Jason Cross: CLICK HERE
No matter how much hypertension I see and manage, I never feel comfortable. This pharmacology presentation provided real data and information to help me decide which agents are best and why, and what considerations to make in monitoring and interactions. Still, most of all there is some excellent evidence to inform my practice! I walked away from this learning feeling much more confident in managing a patient with hypertension needing more than one medication!

In the coming months check out our featured deals section and an area where we begin highlighting suggestions by NPs. If you want to write us your course review to publish and inform other advanced practice providers, we would love that! Please email me directly at tschmitt@npace.org. We always also need your input into what you need to learn. Watch later this month for information on our brief Needs Assessment survey and complete it for a chance to win one of four free conference registrations!
