A Leap Forward in the Treatment of Migraine and Cluster Headache
Course Description
A primary headache disorder, e.g., migraine or cluster, is a common reason people seek medical care. In fact, migraine headache is the second leading cause of disability due to a neurological disorder worldwide. Differentiating among primary headache disorders is often challenging, yet crucial so that effective therapy can be initiated. Recent advances in the treatment of primary headache disorders that target calcitonin gene-related peptide or serotonin 1F receptor provide greater opportunity to reduce the morbidity and disability associated with migraine and cluster headache. This presentation seeks to provide insight into the safety and efficacy of these newer medications and how they may be optimally used as acute or preventive treatment to address the unmet needs of patients with migraine headache or cluster headache.
Learning Objectives
At the end of the activity, participants will be able to:
• Describe unmet needs of people with migraine
• Provide an overview of the pathogenesis of migraine and cluster headache, including the role of calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) and serotonin 1F receptor
• Diagnose, assess and differentiate between primary headache disorders (e.g. migraine, cluster headaches)
• Utilize ICHD-3 criteria for the diagnosis of episodic and chronic migraine and cluster headache
• Describe the efficacy and safety of medications recently approved for migraine and/or cluster headache
