Primary Care Conference
Health is the experience of physical, mental, emotional, social and spiritual well-being. Nurse practitioners and other healthcare professionals across the globe use yoga as a tool for valuable self-care, as well as in their practice settings. Yoga can be safe, science-smart, effective, affordable and therapeutic, depending upon the application. Jay Gupta, a pharmacist and yoga therapist, will discuss the potential ways that yoga might act like a medicine and be positioned as the next blockbuster drug.

The use of electronic cigarettes has rapidly risen over the past 20 years even as smoking cessation efforts have been largely successful. Since the summer of 2019, there have been many reports of e-cigarette related deaths. This is a fast-moving topic with new information from a public health, clinical and public policy perspective. E-cigarette, or vaping, product use associated lung injury (EVALI) is a new diagnosis that describes patients afflicted with this life threatening critical illness. This session will review epidemiology, pathophysiology and up-to-date knowledge on vaping related injury with a special emphasis on how to counsel patients about risks of vaping.
Speakers:
We live in a drug culture with pills for every ill, and ills for every pill. This has resulted in an unprecedented experience of polypharmacy, where prescribing essentially continues to be a one-way street, despite our best efforts with medication reviews. Taking the medicine away is not the acceptable solution. What is? This session considers polypharmacy and deprescription in the older adult population.

Most patients with asthma are managed by primary care providers and not by specialists. This session will summarize the advances in the evaluation and management of asthma from basics to biologics using updated 2019 GINA guidelines. Treatment of difficult asthma, especially severe asthma and asthma/COPD overlap will be discussed. Use of personalized medicine with biologics and new drugs in development for asthma will be reviewed. The challenges of delivering healthcare in rural and other environments with lower access to resources will be incorporated in all treatment approaches.
