Global Health
Over the Past 20 years, the United States has had it’s share of major disasters. These disasters include man made disasters, such as the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and US Pentagon of 9-11-2001, 8 major hurricanes in 2005, most notable, Hurricane Katrina, and more recently Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico. During and in the aftermath of these disasters, many ask the questions, “What can I do to help?” This presentation will take a look back at several of these major disasters, and share lessons learned through the eyes of a Nurse response professional, including tips and tools on planning and preparedness for a response. Every disaster can benefit from the help of others. The help may come from a local state of federal resource, in the way of money, paid professional responders, material resources, and volunteers. Before stepping forward in a disaster response and/or recovery effort, responders and volunteers must be ready and informed. If uniformed and not prepared, these efforts to “make a difference” could actually compromise the safety of those that you are trying to help. Planning and preparedness as a medical responder and/or volunteer before a disaster occurs, will likely make one much more deployable for a successful mission in the aftermath of disaster. Learning opportunities and resources provided in this presentation.
